More about the Individualized Reintegration Plan (IRP)

Plans for home reintegration begin almost as soon as a student arrives at the Lukodi Centre. Becoming self-reliant is a critical aspect of the Lukodi program as the students gain the knowledge and skills for lifelong success.

The primary roadmap used to guide a student's learning and progress toward reintegration is the Individualized Reintegration Plans (IRP). IRPs are based on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) which are used in the United States Special Education System.

In establishing her IRP, the student begins with a Self-Assessment. The Self-Assessment allows her to set personal goals in the areas of physical health, psychological health, parenting and child health, spiritual health, vocational skills and work goals. These goals are to be measurable, specific and realistic, and are developed with the help of her counselor at the Lukodi Centre, who also supports her progress toward these goals over time.

The Self-Assessment helps each girl discover her own strengths and weaknesses, commit to certain achievable goals, and allows for a discussion as to what support she needs from ChildVoice to help her attain her goals.

As a student's IRP is developed, the Lukodi Centre teachers also submit a report card-like assessment for her, listing her grades and providing qualitative feedback on her progress. The teacher also recommends which of the trades being taught at the Lukodi Centre (tailoring, catering, baking, and salon) coincide with the girl's strengths.

Once the Self-Assessment and the teachers' assessments are complete, a team meets with the student to discuss her goals and organize her treatment on a program level. This team consists of the Centre Director, Counselor, an Advisor, and possibly a teacher. Each student meets with the team three times per year to review and update the IRP as needed.

Once the team and the student agree that she is ready to transition home, that student is discharged to her home village. Although she is no longer at the Lukodi Centre, ChildVoice remains involved in her reintegration. The IRPs allow for follow-up to ensure she is receiving the necessary support for her success and maintaining her health and progress once she transitions back to her home and community.

Give today and restore hope to children of war.
