ChildVoice Beads are hand-made by women who work at the Lukome Centre (formerly the Lukodi Centre) in northern Uganda. These beautiful one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets, and earrings are made with recycled paper that is carefully cut into long strips, rolled around a needle and secured with glue. Six coats of environmentally friendly varnish are applied and dried, and then the beads are strung together to create these beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
The child mothers who come to the Lukome Centre have survived the trauma of being kidnapped by rebel armies, forced to be child soldiers and sex slaves, and suffered tremendous brutality. At the Lukome Centre, these child mothers find safety and receive counseling, nutrition, education, and medical care for themselves and their children.
The recycled paper bead project is empowering women by paying them a fair trade wage for the first time since the rebel war began over 20 years ago. Net proceeds from the paper beads sales offset operating expenses of the Lukome Centre.
